Dirk Nowitzki, last year’s NBA MVP award winner, is gearing up for a full year of basketball, if he has things his way.
His first priority is to be playing in June again during the NBA Finals. But after that, he plans to prepare for the German national team's appearance in a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament and, if the Germans grab one of three spots available, he would then travel to Beijing in August for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Last year, James led the Cavaliers to their first playoff sweep in franchise history, taking out the Washington Wizards in four games. James averaged 27.8 points, 7.5 assists, and 8.5 rebounds in the series. In the second round against the New Jersey Nets, James averaged 25.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.6 assists in a 4-2 series win. The Cavaliers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 15 years.
In Game 5 of the series, James scored 48 points, had 9 rebounds and 7 assists; including 29 of Cleveland's last 30 points, all coming after the six minute mark in the fourth quarter, and the team's last 25 points (franchise record) in Cleveland's double-overtime Game 5 victory. James was the only player to score for the Cavaliers in the two overtimes played. He scored only 20 points in Game 6, but led Cleveland to a 98-82 win and their first trip to the NBA Finals in franchise history. James and the Cavaliers were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
Bryant became the first player since Michael Jordon in 1987 to score three straight 50-plus point games last season, netting a season-high 65 points in a home game against the Trailblazers, 50 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and 60 points in a road win against the Memphis Grizzlies.
And with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Greg Oden of the Portland Trailblazers, out with season-ending knee surgery, the Supersonics’ Durant is a heavy favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award at -360.
